The heart of this teaching is zazen, or meditation in a sitting posture, from which all understanding derives.

This, in case you were wondering why we called our first Tricycle Community offering “The Big Sit.” The quote is from Dogen scholar Kazuaki Tanahashi’s Enlightenment Unfolds: The Essential Teachings of Zen Master Dogen.

Each week we’ll be exploring Kaz’s introduction to Dogen’s teachings in our weekly Tricycle Community discussions. If you’d like to join us in the discussion, here’s the first part and here’s the second. You’ll need to be a Tricycle Community member to take part in these discussions but it’s easy—and free—to join the almost 5,000 members who have signed up so far.

Also new this week: Enkyo Roshi’s 4th video teaching on Dogen’s Genjokoan. You can read the text here. It’s pithy—and short—and Enkyo Roshi does a great job shedding light on it.

We’ll soon be introducing teachers from other Buddhist traditions and beginning discussions that relate to their practice. So keep an eye out, we’ll keep you posted here and at the Tricycle Community.
