Iraq veterans Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson struggled with depression and anger for years after returning home from their traumatic tours of duty. In an attempt to put their haunting combat experiences behind them, the two friends embark on an extraordinary journey—a 2,700-mile trek across America.

Their hike across the Rocky Mountains and the deserts of the Southwest is punishing, but the inner journey proves to be the more challenging mission Tom and Anthony undertake. Like many of their fellow veterans, Tom and Anthony tackle post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the pair simultaneously deal with an unseen battle scar: moral injury, the extreme guilt or shame that arises after one goes against their own moral code in the line of duty. With the help of mentors along the way, the two learn to transform their lives by turning within, finding the cure to emotional injury in spiritual practice.

Almost Sunrise calls attention to America’s veteran mental health crisis and suicide epidemic, and ends with a hopeful message that shows the healing power of contemplative practices and community.

This film will be available for streaming until midnight on Saturday, August 31.
