This feature documentary by Maartje Nevejan dives into the deep waters of grief—not only personal, but ecological, colonial, and spiritual. Sparked by the loss of her partner and the grief of her children in the face of ecological collapse, Nevejan resists centering her own story. Instead, she opens a space for something larger: a cinematic ritual that gathers three remarkable women—grief doulas, ritualists, spiritual disruptors—who guide others not toward closure, but transformation. In collaboration with visionary ecologist Dr. Monica Gagliano and Zen priest and grief pioneer Roshi Joan Halifax, Just Our Heart expands the mourning room. It invites voices that are usually silenced: the dead, the exploited, the Earth herself. This is a film that doesn’t offer answers—it invites participation in something older than language: ritual as a way of relating to loss, and as a method of resistance.

Amsterdam-based director Maartje Nevejan is an award-winning independent filmmaker with a background in theatre and multimedia. Her work researches and expresses the raw poetic quality of reality. Nevejan is a change maker, manifesting innovative and creative approaches to fulfilling her visions. Since 2015, Nevejan has been developing a new visual film language for subjective inner experiences, in multi-media and in a 10-year film trilogy. She cooperates with scientists and artists in order to journey deep into these inner worlds. Her first film in the trilogy, “Are you there?” (2019), dealt with young adults, hallucinations, and epilepsy. The second, “Descending the Mountain” (2021), is a narration about mystical experiences through meditation and psychedelics. Her third film of the “inner-world” trilogy, “Just Our Heart” (2026), is a documentary about grief.
