Lama Karma is the spiritual director of the Milarepa Retreat Center in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. In this short practice, he demonstrates the use of gentle touch to integrate body and breath, forming a bridge to open awareness.
This practice draws from a framework known as Open Mindfulness, which “explores the yogic awareness practices of Tibetan Buddhism within the contemporary context of the mindfulness movement,” Lama Karma says.
“I first connected with Open Mindfulness in 2014 through Lama Denys Rinpoche, who was teaching a seminar at Thubten Choling, my monastery in New York,” Lama Karma continues.
“At that time I was in the middle of a year-long mindfulness facilitation training course through UCLA, and Open Mindfulness seemed to relate well with many of the insights I was having about bringing the yogic approach of Tibetan Buddhism into the mindfulness world. In 2017 my wife and I traveled to Tenerife, Spain, to live with Lama Denys and Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche’s International Dzogchen Community. Lama Denys was finalizing his book on Open Mindfulness and I began translating it, along with related course materials, from French into English. Through this work, my previous mindfulness and Buddhism training, and my connection to Lama Denys, I was authorized as a facilitator. Open Mindfulness seminars have been running since 2014 with over forty facilitators in six different countries in Europe. I am currently the only facilitator in the US.”
