What does it mean to be gay, Buddhist, and living in the Himalayas? In celebration of Gay Pride Month, the Rubin Museum of New York is hosting “OUT in the Himalayas,” a lecture series that will address gay, lesbian, and transgender issues in the Himalayan region. Topics are set to include “Lesbians of Yunnan,” “Hijras: The ‘Third Gender’ in Pakistan,” and “The Fate and Fortunes of the Third Sex in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism.” In “Will Gay Marriage Be Adopted in the World’s Youngest Democracy?” Sunil Pant, Nepal’s first openly gay member of parliament, will discuss his aim to make Nepal the first Asian country to adopt equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

Kudos to the Rubin Museum for taking up this tough and under-addressed topic. It should prove to be an interesting and thought provoking series!
