Dogen's Last Text: An Evolution or Radical Change? A Tricycle Premium Event with Steven Heine May 2025

Join Dr. Steven Heine, professor of Religious Studies and History at Florida International University, on May 6 at 2 p.m. ET for a discussion on Dogen’s last text, the unfinished “12 Fascicles Collection,” which, straying from Dogen’s typical emphasis on zazen, emphasizes the importance of karma. Does this later-in-life shift represent an evolution in the Japanese Zen master’s thinking, an abrupt departure, or something else, like a new intended audience? Do these ideas even belong to Dogen at all?

Referencing his paper “The Shadow of the Whip: Memento Mori in Dogen’s 12 Fascicles Collection (十二卷本集)” and grounding us in the cultural context, Heine will review different interpretations of this text and the implications.

This event is free for Tricycle Premium subscribers and $10 for general admission. Subscribe to Premium or upgrade your existing subscription for free access.

Dr. Steven Heine

Dr. Steven Heine is a professor of Religious Studies and History and the founding director of the Institute for Asian Studies at Florida International University. He has published forty monographs and coedited books on East Asian religions and society, especially involving the spread of Zen Buddhism from China to medieval Japan. Heine is a recipient of the prestigious Emperor’s Award from the Japanese government for a lifetime of dedicated service to promoting cross-cultural relations. Heine, an authority on the life and thought of Master Dogen (1200–1253), founder of the Soto Zen sect, has examined Dogen’s major text, the Shobogenzo, in light of his view of koans, philosophy of time, poetry compositions, and use of Chinese sources. Heine’s current book project is an analysis of Dogen’s final body of writing, the “12 Fascicles Collection,” which expresses a view of morality based on reckoning with the law of causality through enacting deeds of repentance.
