Pilgrimage is an extraordinary experience. People have been making sacred journeys to sanctified places since monkeys became men. In Chinese folklore even monkeys have this urge to wander (see: Journey to the West). Because pilgrimage is so extraordinary I’m anticipating big things from the “Pilgrimage and Buddhist Art” exhibit at The Asia Society Museum, running through June 20. Everybody in the NYC area should check it out. It explores the relationship between Buddhist pilgrimage and Asian art. See also: “Journeys of Body and Soul,” an article about the exhibit by Lee Lawrence in the Wall Street Journal.
