J. C. Cleary (1947-2023) held a PhD in East Asian languages from Harvard University and translated many books on Zen and Buddhism, including The Blue Cliff Record with his brother Thomas Cleary, Swampland Flowers: The Letters and Lectures of Zen Master Ta Hui, and A Buddha From Korea: The Zen Teachings of T’aego.
