In everyday life we’re usually trying to achieve some goal, and we measure our worth by whether or not we accomplish that goal. But The Heart Sutra, one of Mahayana Buddhism’s most treasured teachings, tells us that there is nothing to attain, and Rinzai Zen masters such as Linji tell us that there is nothing to do. In this series, Julie Nelson, an economics professor and a dharma teacher in the Boundless Way Zen school, will talk about how the concept of nonattainment can transform the way we work with our desires, intentions, and deeply felt commitments, examining our longing for happiness and health and our aspirations for social, economic, and environmental justice.
