The cover of our 20th anniversary issue of Tricycle features Kazuaki Tanahashi. Michael Haederle caught up with the busy calligrapher and translator this spring in icy Montreal. They discuss both Tanahashi’s art (we featured a portfolio of his ensos in our Fall 2010 issue) and his translating work, which recently resulted in a magnificent new edition of Dogen’s Shobo Genzo.
“I enjoy teaching calligraphy and brushwork,” [Tanahashi] says in his quiet voice. Even though he has watched thousands of people struggling to copy brushstrokes from classical examples, teaching is always a fresh experience. “Each time I learn something,” he says. “I feel like I’m becoming a better calligrapher.”
