Sojun Mel Weitsman

Sojun Mel Weitsman (1929–2021) founded the Berkeley Zen Center in 1967 upon instruction from his teacher, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, and became its first abbot in 1985, remaining in the role until October 2020. He also served as co-abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center from 1988 to 1997.
