Thai Forest Tradition

The Thai forest tradition is a modern Theravada Buddhist lineage from the forest monasteries of northeastern Thailand. It emphasizes strict discipline, meditation practice, and direct realization over textual study alone. Ajahn Mun Bhuridatto (1870–1949) and Ajahn Sao Kantasilo (1859–1942) founded the tradition in the early twentieth century. Ajahn Chah (1918–1992) and others carried it forward and trained Western disciples, who established forest monasteries throughout Europe and North America. These articles cover teachings, biography, and commentary from Thai forest monks and their Western dharma heirs. Topics include meditation, renunciation, and the practice of Theravada Buddhism today.
