Balfour Mount

Balfour Mount is a Canadian surgeon and academic. He is considered the father of palliative care in North America. After visiting Cicely Saunders’ St Christopher’s Hospice in London, he helped to create a similar ward within the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal in 1974 and coined the term “palliative care.” He is the founding director of the Royal Victoria Hospital Palliative Care Service and the McGill Programs in Integrated Whole Person Care. Dr. Mount is an emeritus professor of medicine at McGill University and the founder of McGill’s biennial International Congress on Care of the Terminally Ill.
